The Plan

What are the Skoolies?

We are converting a public school bus into an RV or “skoolie”. Once the conversion is complete the students and sponsor will travel to the west coast and go camping in various states. This adventure will allow us to experience the open road and explore America firsthand in a vehicle we built together.

The challenges we face will provide valuable learning opportunities, from researching and designing the bus to executing the conversion and planning the trip. Our goal is to push our limits and overcome obstacles while developing teamwork, communication, and a range of other essential skills.

Indiana is very big on RV culture and industry but recent declines in interest have left local automotive businesses struggling. We are committed to investing our time and effort to support both our community and the environment.

Inspired by other Workforce Wednesday groups exploring the recycling industry, we’ve recognized a valuable opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint and reconnect with nature. In the image below, you can see the various places our students will have the chance to experience firsthand, going beyond traditional classroom learning.

How will we do this?

We plan on raising money for supplies to renovate the bus. We will completely transform it into a fully functioning RV and we plan on using eco-friendly resources like solar panels. This will take time and money that is why we are asking for your support.

We already removed items like seats, flooring, unnecessary lights, and much more. This is to clear room for new flooring, new electrical ports, beds, bathroom, a kitchen and a living area. We have even 3D printed a model of what we want the interior to look like.
